The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), and the Akwa Ibom State Government are in disagreement over the state of readiness of the 12,000 barrels- per- day Amakpe Refinery which is located in the state.
The DPR regulates the country’s petroleum sector, while the Akwa Ibom State Government is an investor in the said refinery.

While the Akwa- Ibom State Government has withdrawn from the project in which it has invested about $7 million, alleging that the promoters lack the financial capacity to operate it successfully, the DPR says the project is about 95 percent concluded and almost ready to take-off.

The DPR, in an interview with Businessday, said as far as it was concerned, there has not been any technical problem with the project , which it says is over 95 per cent complete, and adds that the equipment is only waiting to be shipped back to the country. “The equipment have been manufactured and completed. What remains is to ship it down to Nigeria”, it said.
