Navy confident of securing Nigerian waterways

The Nigerian Navy at the weekend expressed confidence in the ability of its officers and warships to effectively police the nation's territorial waters, just as it attributed the drastic reduction of militancy in the Niger-Delta region to consistent patrol of the waterways.

The flag officer commanding Western Naval Command, Emmanuel Ogbor, who spoke at the end of the second bi-annual sea patrol in the Delta area, said the fleet of ships at the disposal of the navy are in good enough shape to take up the challenge of ensuring adequate security along the nation's maritime border areas whenever the need arises.

Mr Ogbor said the essence of the 72-hour exercise on the sea, code named ‘Operation Waegbe', was also meant to test the combat readiness of his officers in any unforeseen situation.
