Nigerian army deployed tanks and troops in the troubled central city of Jos following a hint that a disgruntled group planned a reprisal attack Monday, security officials and witnesses said.
A deadly stabbing of a police officer sparked clashes in the tense city on February 15 as Muslims commemorated the birth of the Prophet Mohammed, with witnesses reporting several others killed.
The army special task force (STF) in the city Monday deployed armoured tanks and dozens of stern-looking soldiers in strategic and flash points of Jos, especially in settlements where ethnic Hausa people reside, said an AFP reporter, who counted at least six armoured tanks.
A miltary helicopter also hovered above the city.
In separate strongly-worded statements, the army and the police warned residents that they would deal decisively with trouble makers who planned or instigate a reprisal attack in volatile Jos, capital of Plateau State .
Security information hinted that a group that felt cheated in Tuesday's attack, planned the reprisal.
