Nigeria: Akwa Ibom Panel On Child Witchcraft Begins Sitting in Uyo

Uyo — The commission of inquiry into allegation of witchcraft by children in Akwa Ibom set up by the state government late last month has commenced sitting in Uyo.

The commission headed by Justice Godwin Abraham was sworn in by Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio on November 22, 2010, and has called on interested members of the public to make submissions.

In their submission, the coalition of child rights organizations in the state submitted written evidence to the commission of inquiry.

The NGOs, made up of Nigerian and international child rights bodies, made its submissions to the secretary of the commission at the Judiciary Headquarters in Uyo.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the commission had so far received three written memoranda.

Mr. James Ibor of the Basic Rights Counsel made the submission on behalf of Child's Rights and Rehabilitation Network and Stepping Stones Nigeria.
