Nigeria: US Seeks Speedy Prosecution of Jos Violence Culprits

Abuja — United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Terence McCulley, has called on Abuja to speedily arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of the latest mayhem in Jos, the violence-prone city in the North, where scores have died since Christmas eve, beginning with bomb blasts..

"We appreciate the comments made on Saturday by (Jonathan) and other Nigerian leaders. The Nigerian Federal Government, as well as state and local officials, should do all they can to ensure that the perpetrators of these violent acts are brought swiftly to justice," McCulley stressed.

"At the same time, we trust that Nigerian security officials will exercise appropriate restraint and show respect for human rights as they strive to promote peace, security, and the rule of law.

"All parties should seek constructive means for addressing the continuing cycle of violence. We encourage all parties to seek to resolve their differences through peaceful means and constructive dialogue."

By Tuesday, the death toll had exceeded 100 in the attacks and counter attacks since December 24.

This added to the over 14,000 people who have died in ethnic and religious violence since 1999 in Nigeria, according to the International Crisis Group based in Brussels.
