How Insecurity Threatens Delta Ports

Warri — Insecurity, community restiveness, improper land speculation and encroachment into port land, siltation and non-proper maintenance of water channels , are part of the problems hampering the smooth operation at most of the Nigerian seaports. Foreign ships operating around the Delta ports, are said to have withdrawn due to insecurity.

Most of the infrastructure at the ports are decaying because of under utilization following the non-patronage of the ports by foreign vessels. Link roads within the ports are described as death traps, with several potholes obstructing free movement of trucks within the port.

At the Delta port which consists of the old and new Delta ports in Warri, and other ports within the state at Koko, Burutu and Sapele, the crude oil terminals at Escravos and Forcados, the story is the same; the ports are operating below capacity and therefore are being underutilized.
