House Suspends Jonathan's N98.4 Billion Virement Request

This Day
14 October 2011

Abuja — President Goodluck Jonathan's request to the National Assembly seeking a virement of the 2011 Budget to the tune of N98.44 billion narrowly escaped been thrown out yesterday at the House of Representatives as some lawmakers vehemently kicked against the proposal.

The opposition mounted against it was so stiff that the leadership of the House was forced to step down the bill to allow for more consultations.

Deputy Speaker, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, who presided over yesterday's plenary had an uphill task educating his colleagues on the need to refer the request to the Committee on Appropriation to study and subsequently report to the House.

There were shouts of disapproval each time there were moves to send the virement request to the relevant committees of the House for further legislative work.
