N/Assembly raises constitution review panel

Two days after President Jonathan insisted on proposing constitution changes to allow for a 7-year single term, the National Assembly yesterday set up a joint constitution amendment committee with issues of forming state police, creation of new states, revenue allocation and local government reforms among the items slated for review.

Though the Senate and the House of Representatives did not mention among their agenda a review of the tenure of president, governors and legislators, Jonathan’s proposed extended single term is expected to be referred to the joint committee for discussion.

Each of the two chambers yesterday raised a 46-member committee that would represent it on the joint panel, which would be chaired by Deputy Senate president Ike Ekweremadu with Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha as his deputy.
