Nabteb Begins Training of Ex-Militants

Benin City — The Amnesty programme of the Federal Government received a boost yesterday as the National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) said it has commenced a partnership deal with the agency in charge of Amnesty to empower ex-militants in skill acquistion that would make them self-reliant.

Registrar/Chief Executive of NABTEB, Dr. Olatunde Aworanti, who disclosed this while addressing newsmen on the release of May/June 2011 NBC/NTC examinations results in Benin-City, said the training programme was aimed at training the ex-militants under the "Modular Trade Certificate Scheme."

He noted that since government at all levels could not provide the needed jobs, it then became imperative to beef-up the chances of the ex-militants to acquire basic skills that would help them to be self-employed.

"We are making them to acquire more skills so that they can be certified as true craftsmen," Aworanti stated.

The NABTEB boss while announcing the release of the 2011 May/June National Business Certificate (NBC) and the National Technical Certificate (NTC) examinations said 35,953 candidates, representing 32.86 per cent had credit passes in five subjects and above including Mathematics and English language.

Similarly, he disclosed that 58,658 candidates, representing 53.61 per cent obtained five credit passes and above with or without English Language and Mathematics out of the 109,416 candidates that sat for the examinations.

Aworanti, however, pointed out that 4,343 candidates, representing 3.97 per cent had their results cancelled over cases of examination malpractices, noting that though 109,416 candidates sat for the examination, only 32,808 representing 30 per cent were certified as craftsmen.

While stressing that the Board had evolved various strategies to stem the menace of examination malpractice in order to protect the sanctity and credibility of its certificates, he pleaded with stakeholders in the business of education to complement the efforts of NABTEB in sustaining the war against examination malpractice.
