Jonathan names 8 new RECs

President Goodluck Jonathan has nominated eight persons to be appointed as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The nominees are: Sylvester Okey Ezeani (Anambra), Professor Mohammed Tabi’u (Jigawa), Dr. Lawrence Azubuike (Imo), Sam Olugbadebo Olumekun (Ondo), Professor Istifanus Ishaku Dafwang (Plateau), Mrs. Gesila Khan (Bayelsa), Mr. Samuel Madaki (Taraba) and Dr. Gabriel Ada (Cross River).

In a letter addressed to the Senate President David Mark, Jonathan said the appointment was pursuant to section 14(3)(a) of the Third Schedule to the Constitution of the 1999 as amended.

Similarly, the president forwarded the names of five nominees to the Senate for confirmation as members of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) for confirmation.

They are: Alhaji Abdullahi Ado Bayero (North-west), Alhaji Isa Ozi Salami (North-central), Ekpo Una Owo Nta (South-south), Professor Olu Aina (South-west) and Dame Julie Onum-Nwariaku (South-east).

The nominees are to complete the existing vacancies in the commission, which requires that in addition to the Chairman, the commission shall consist of 12 members made up of two representatives from each of the six geo political zones of the country.
