YENAGOA, Nigeria — Suspected pirates on Monday ambushed and shot dead two patrol policemen along a waterway plied by vessels servicing oil companies off Bayelsa state in south Nigeria, police said.

"Two of our men were killed by sea pirates who laid ambush for them in the waterways of Swali in Yenagoa," Eguavoen Emokpae, police spokesman for the key oil state of Bayelsa told AFP.

The head of a local maritime union, Lloyd Sese, confirmed the incident.

"I received a call early this morning that some marine policemen were killed in the waterways ... in Yenagoa," he said.

Multi-national oil firms operating in the Niger Delta use the waterway where the attack took place to convey supplies to oil installations and flow stations.
