ASABA – A renowned journalist and Chairman of the Editorial Board of Guardian Newspapers, Dr Reuben Abati, weekend, lamented that the people of the Niger Delta region have not optimally benefited from the creation of Niger Delta Ministry and the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, which were supposed to address their needs.
He said that the bodies had become a curse instead of the expected blessing.
He maintained that before the proprietary rights of the people of the Niger Delta can be satisfactory, the policies have to be reviewed while the issue of fiscal federalism, resource control, the constitution and other relevant laws, including oil industry related laws, should be re-opened and properly addressed.
He was, however, quick to add that “the integrity and efficiency of government needed to be improved, while state governors in the region must resist the temptation of using vote pattern in the election as a measure for the distribution of development programmes in favour of those who supported them.”
