Rivers emerges tops in provision of basic education

The federal ministry of education yesterday conferred good performance awards on state governments on how well they managed the resources acquired from the Universal Basic Education (UBE).

Every year, Nigeria dedicates two percent of its consolidated revenue fund for the implementation of the UBE programme through a number of interventions in critical areas of need, shared among the states.

Realising the need to set good examples and encourage best practices, the federal government further provided financial incentives as a morale booster towards ensuring that states which have performed exceptionally well in accessing and utilising UBE funds are encouraged to sustain the tempo and to challenge other states to emulate them.

According to Ahmed Modibbo, the executive secretary of the UBE commission (UBEC), “The good performance award, among other things, is aimed at informing the public about the attainments in line with the objectives of providing free, compulsory and continuous basic education to Nigeria’s school-age population.
