Nigeria's biggest operator in the petroleum industry, Shell, has declared that Nigeria has continued to lose billions of dollars through significant volumes of the country's crude oil production lost to thieves that thrive in illegal export of the commodity.
Managing Director, Mr. Mutiu Sumonu, who hosted a media briefing on the company's activities in Nigeria said massive stealing of crude oil from the company's flowlines in the Niger Delta has increased despite reduction in violence in the area.
The activities of the thieving groups, he said, also result in huge oil spills and consequent impact on the environment.
Apart from losing volumes of produced oil and condensate valued at several millions of dollars on daily basis, according to him, the activities of the thieves leave the production facilities of the company in constant state of disrepair and build huge maintenance cost on joint venture partners.
In its briefing notes Nigerian operations for 2010, Shell stated: "Heavily armed and well organized groups attack oil and gas facilities in the delta, shut down operations, kidnap staff and sabotage pipelines."
The company stated in the briefing notes that its operations suffered 155 reported incidents of crude oil theft that involved vandalism, spills, fire and arrests.
