Presidential election tribunal kicks off

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal held its inaugural sitting yesterday
with promises coming from all parties towards ensuring that justice is
adequately dispensed.

The president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Isah Ayo Salami, is the
chairman of the tribunal. He would handle the petitions alongside with four
other justices of the court.

Two petitions from the Congress of the Progressive Change (CPC) and Hope
Democratic Party (HDP) are the bone of contention before the jurists.

James Ochole, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) leading eight other
counsels, two of them senior advocates for the petitioner - CPC; Adegboyega
Awomolo, SAN leading two other SANs and 10 other lawyers to represent the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

While another SAN, Joe Gadzama leading two other SANs and six other
lawyers are to represent the ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) with Wole Olanipekun leading eight Senior Advocates of Nigeria and
about 15 other lawyers to represent President Goodluck Jonathan and his
vice, Mohammed Namadi Sambo.

The Court of Appeal is the court of first jurisdiction in the presidential election
matters.
