Army Begins Demolition of Recovered Arms From Ex-Niger Delta Militants

Enugu — The Nigerian Army yesterday began the demolition of dangerous arms and ammunition recovered from ex-Niger Delta militants.

Briefing journalists on the exercise which took place at 82 Base Ammunition Depot Demolition ground at Lokpanta in Abia State, the General Officer Commanding the Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, Major-General Sarkin Bello, explained that a total of 1,798 riffles, 1,981 guns of various types, 70 RPGs, 159 pistols, 1 Spear and 6 cannons were back loaded at Headquarters of 82 Division on May, 2011 by the Niger Delta Amnesty Committee.

He explained that arms and ammunition were stored at the 82 base Ammunition Depot until the authority to demolish them was received from AHQ which culminated in the present breaking down and subsequent demolition exercise.
