Police intercept car with firearms

Less than 48 hours to the National Assembly polls, the Delta State police command on Wednesday recorded a major breakthrough with the arrest of a Kia Rio car fully loaded with guns, explosives and grenades at Patani.

Spokesperson of the state police command, Charles Muka said the arms included a Rocket Propelled Grenade, five dynamites, 25 cartridges, seven single-barrel guns and two double-barrel guns. He however refused to disclose the names of the culprits and their mission.

"Three young men were arrested at Patani with arms and are presently being interrogated by the police in Asaba," he said.

A police source, however, said that two police men who escorted the car and an aide of a prominent candidate were apprehended by the police at a checkpoint at the border town between Delta and Bayelsa States. The vehicle conveying the deadly weapons was covered with campaign posters of one of the South-South governors.
