Traditional ruler killed in northeastern Nigeria

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – A victim's brother says that two motorcycle-mounted gunmen killed a traditional ruler in Nigeria's troubled northeast.

Bana Modu told The Associated Press on Tuesday that his brother, Ibrahim Mohammed, was shot dead at his palace grounds in the city of Maiduguri on Monday evening.

Modu says two other men were shot in the legs.

Police blame a radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram for the attack, the latest in a rash of targeted killings that have left dozens dead since July.

Boko Haram was thought to be broken up in July 2009 after its leader was arrested and died in police custody.
