Nigerian military confirms attack on Agip facility

The Nigerian military Wednesday confirmed an attack on an Agip facility in oil-producing Bayelsa state. A spokesman for the joint military task force in the Niger Delta oil region, Lt.-Col.Timothy Antigha, said an explosion occurred at an Agip Well head at Clough creek in Ekeremor local government area of the state at 11 pm local time Tuesday. 'We suspect a certain criminal called Gen. Passman to be the mastermind. Passman had threatened two weeks ago to attack the Agip facility if he was not given money,' Antigha said, without giving details on the extent of damage to the facility. There were no casualties.

The military spokesman described the attack as 'isolated', and that it had nothing to do with the threat issued by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND)

On Monday, MEND warned it would attack oil facilities and campaign rallies in the region.

The Federal Government Tuesday ordered the State Security Service (SSS) and the police
to foil any such attacks.
