Yenagoa – Some concerned indigenes of the riverine community of Igbomotoru in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, have expressed concern over the increasing rate of illegal local refinery activities in the area.
Though security agencies, especially the Joint Task Force, had waged sustained war against this dangerous but lucrative business with several arrests made, the business has continued to flourish in the far flung isolated hinterland communities of the Niger Delta, ostensibly due to high unemployment among the youths.
Specifically, the natives were alarmed by what they described as the despoliation of their environment due to the unwholesome activities of the operators of the illegal refinery.
They called on relevant security agencies to redouble efforts in apprehending and prosecuting all those involved in the illegal business.
