The Federal Government, on Thursday, said the amnesty programme initiated for the youth of the Niger Delta had put an end to organised crimes and militancy in the area.
The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Mr Kingsley Kuku, told newsmen in Akure that the effect of the amnesty programme had led to an appreciable increase in the oil production of the country.
According to him, the daily oil production in the country had increased from 700, 000 barrel per day before the amnesty programme, to its current 2.3 million barrels today.
Besides, he said the youth of the area had completely reasoned with the Federal Government on the need to develop the oil rich region of Nigeria , saying that less than 1,000 youths still engaged in militancy activities.
Kuku explained that at least 26, 356 youths who were formerly armed and were involved in serious organised criminal activities in the area, under different groups, had so far, embraced the amnesty programme.
