Activist Chides INEC Over Non-Display of Voters Register

A member of the Niger Delta Development Commission Project Presidential Monitoring Committee, Mr. Furoebi Akeni, has expressed concern that thousands of eligible voters in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area may be disenfranchised in the forthcoming general elections following the failure of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to display the registered voters list in the area.

Akene an environmentalist in an interview in Yenagoa,  cited communities in the far hinterland of the council, such as Ofonibiri and its adjoining surrounding where the locals were denied the opportunity of knowing if their names were on the register.

Though the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Engr. Edwin Nwatalari last week told newsmen that the commission had received about 3,000 complaints from  the state over anomalies, Akene noted with sadness that indigenes of Ofonibiri and its sister communities could not check their data because the exercise was not carried out their area.

He added  that could not check his name because of the non display of the voters register list in the area.
