A cargo vessel on anchor in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has been attacked by pirates who kidnapped two crew members on board.

Following the incident, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) echoed a warning by the United Nations that pirate attacks off West Africa's Gulf of Guinea were becoming more rampant and violent.

Noel Choong of the bureau's Kuala Lumpur-based piracy reporting centre said pirates fired at the Curacao-flagged vessel before boarding it Tuesday in Port Harcourt, .

Noel Choong was reported to have disclosed that pirates robbed the crew before fleeing and took the captain and the chief engineer with them.
