MEND and the new face of agitation (Pt 2)

Business Day
16 September 2012

Zebulon Agomuo

On the impact of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and a special ministry created for the region, Ankio Briggs, a Niger Delta activist said they had not positively impacted the lives of the people.

Now, we move to the Ministry of the Niger Delta; I am saying that there was never a need for a ministry for the Niger Delta, but if there is a need for it, it should be in the Niger Delta not in Abuja. And that is why the Niger Delta Ministry cannot do anything in the Niger Delta as long as it is located in Abuja. As far as I am concerned, all the agencies that had been created have not really achieved anything for the Niger Delta people.

That is why this call for Sovereign National Conference (SNC) and for Resource Control must be heeded. We have been talking about resource control before Jonathan became president; and we have not stopped talking about it.

The agitation has nothing to do with Jonathan being president; we shall continue the agitation until government listens to us. Briggs claimed that Jonathan's emergence as president had not helped the cause of the region. When our brother took over after the death of Yar'Adua, we thought that he would right some of the wrongs against the Niger Delta, but between then and now nothing has changed for the best for the region.
