The man, MD Abubakar

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 12, Bauchi, Mohammed Dikko Abubakar, popularly known as ‘MD Abubakar’ has been appointed as the acting Inspector General of Police. Born on May 5, 1958, MD Abubakar hails from Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

He enlisted into the Force as a Cadet Inspector on August 1, 1979. The acting IGP, who holds Diploma in Administration and Criminology, has meritoriously served the Nigeria Police in many capacities. Important positions he held in the force include, Assistant Commissioner of Police, State CID, Sokoto Police Command; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Federal Operations, Force Headquarters, Lagos; and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Airport Police Command (MMIA), Lagos.

The Acting IG is a committed Crime Fighter (Operational Man) who served as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration), Lagos State Police Command.
On his elevation to the position of Commissioner of Police, he served as a substantive Commissioner of Police in charge of many Police Commands across the Federation.
Some of these are: Plateau, Abia, Kwara, Kano, Airport and Lagos State Police Commands.
Abubakar, while a Police Commissioner in Lagos, was in the habit of paying surprise visits to Commands and Divisional Headquarters at very odd hours. He was also noted for patrolling the city at nights in unofficial vehicles. Sometimes, he disguised himself to be able to catch his men in the act.

An amiable and intelligent officer, he was promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) and he subsequently became the AIG in charge of Zone 2, comprising Lagos and Ogun States. He was also the AIG Zone 5, Benin, comprising of Edo, Delta and Bayelsa States. He was later posted to Zone 6, comprising Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Ebonyi States.
A detribalized Nigerian, MD Abubakar is currently AIG in charge of Zone 12, Bauchi.
