Fear gripped Nigeria on Monday after a wave of Christmas bombings blamed on militants killed more than 40, including worshippers who were left begging for mercy and burning to death as they exited a church. Hundreds of residents sought to flee the violence-torn city of Damaturu on Monday fearing further attacks and clashes between Islamists and police, while some 30 Christian shops were burnt in the nearby city of Potiskum late
 Sunday.

Islamist militants set off bombs across Nigeria on Christmas Day - three targeting churches including one that killed at least 27 people - raising fears that they are trying to ignite sectarian civil war.

The Boko Haram Islamist sect, which aims to impose sharia law across the country, claimed responsibility for the three church bombs, the second Christmas in a row the group has caused mass carnage with deadly bombings of churches. Security forces also blamed the sect for two other blasts in the north.
St Theresa's Catholic Church in Madala, a satellite town about 40 km from the centre of the capital Abuja, was packed when the bomb exploded just outside.

A message circulating on social websites warns of a more devastating attacks on New Year day. One of the messages seen by elombah.com says:

To all Christians in Islamic Northern Nigeria and Nigeria's Middle Belt: I have just gotten words that what Boko Haram (aka Al-Sunnah Wal-Jama'ah) plans for you on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day will make yesterday's bomb attacks look like a child's play. And so, I urge you not to lose your guard as you try to usher in and celebrate the new year. If you pray in your home, I'm sure God would understand. Think back to all my previous warnings before you discard this one...President Goodluck Jonathan is more interested in removing the remaining petrol subsidy than give a hoot about your life. Hear what he said regarding yesterday's bomb explosions: "The issue of bombing is one of the burdens we must live with. It will not last forever."....Meanwhile, from an authoritative source, I hear a coup d'etat is brewing...I won't divulge the source...
.
..Happy New Year in advance!
