Ibeno - The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) on Monday called for the immediate cleanup of the Niger Delta region, as recommended by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
The IYC President, Mr Mabiye Kuromiema, made the call in an interview with newsmen at the ongoing three-day Eastern Zonal Convention of the council in Ibeno, Akwa Ibom.
He said that the people of the Niger Delta were not happy with the continued pollution of their environment by the international oil companies operating in the region.
``We totally condemn the continued pollution of our environment by the operations of the oil companies, which have resulted in the destruction of our ecosystem and the basis of our survival.
