“None of the institutions mandated with monitoring oil exploration in the Niger Delta is functional”.

This assertion was made by Senator Magnus Abe as the Senate considered the United Nations environment report of oil spills in Ogoni Land.

Senator Abe noted that the monitoring agencies depended on the same oil companies which they are supposed to be monitoring for logistics.

Senator Yusuf Baba Ahmed who led the motion urged the Senate to mandate its committees on Niger Delta, Environment and Petroleum (Upstream) to interface with the Federal Government, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and the Ogoni people to ensure the implementation of the United Nations directive for a $1 billion compensation.
