The Nigeria Labour Congress on Wednesday described as untrue what the Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Deziani Alison-Madueke, said in Perth, Australia, about the proposed removal of subsidies on petroleum products.

The President of the NLC, Mr. Abdulwahed Omar, said in an e-mail on Wednesday that the minister’s utterance was a deliberate move by the government to mislead Nigerians on the issue of the subsidy.

At a press conference in Australia, venue of on-going Commonwealth Heads of State Meeting, Alison-Madueke had said that the Federal Government had not decided on the removal of oil subsidy. She also reportedly said that government had not picked a date for its removal.

Omar said the minister’s claims were meant to mislead the international community and to dissuade the citizenry from mobilising against the planned removal of the subsidy.
