News - Africa news .Lagos, Nigeria - The twin threats by the dreaded Boko Haram religious sect and the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) to attack celebrations marking the 51st independence anniversary and the one-week warning strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) continued the cycle of violence in Nigeria as reported in the media this week.

Both militant organizations issued their threats as the nation prepared to mark the 51st independence anniversary while ASUU, protesting government's inability to implement agreements with it in 2009, warned it was going to embark on the warning strike and could transit to a full-scale shutdown if government turned deaf ears to its demands.
