A coalition of ethnic and civil society groups in the Niger Delta on Friday urged all Nigerians to rise up as a people to resist terrorism.

The group, under the aegis of United Niger Delta Energy Development Security Strategy (UNDEDSS), noted that terrorism in Nigeria is primarily directed at destroying the country’s peace, unity and progress.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the UNDEDSS declaration is coming against the backdrop of a bomb threat by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).

MEND on Wednesday threatened to detonate explosives in the vicinity of the
Eagles Square
in Abuja on October 1.

“These acts of terrorism are solely because a new political equation of justice, equity and development is unfolding under President Goodluck Jonathan,” UNDEDSS Secretary-General, Tony Uranta, told NAN on telephone.

According to him, UNDEDSS “will join God to curse all evil people that will cause the brutal shedding of any more innocent lives within the Nigerian space.”

Mr Uranta urged security agencies nationwide to be watchful for others who might want to sabotage the nation using the name of MEND.
