FG Moves to Upgrade Maritime Academy

The Federal Govern-ment has begun moves to upgrade the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron into a maritime university as it is championing the launch of a N5 billion-endowment fund to actualise the dream.

President Goodluck Jonathan is to be the Special Guest of Honour at the launch billed for Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos on October 31, 2011. THISDAY learnt the endowment fund is to enable the academy to address the capital and infrastructural requirements as pre-requisites for meeting the status of a degree-awarding institution as required by the Nigeria University Commission.

The Acting Rector, MAN Oron, Mr. Joshua Okpo, said in a press statement at the weekend that the N5 billion endowment fund was instituted by the governing council of the academy. When fully upgraded, the school would provide training and development of maritime needs for the maritime sector.

The Minister of Transport, Alhaji Idris Umar, will be the chief host at the launch while the Chairman Governing Council MAN Oron, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, would co-host.
