FG dusts Abacha confab report 16 years after •As Belgore heads review committee

SIXTEEN years after the conduct of the National Constitutional Conference, the Federal Government has removed from the shelf its report for consideration.
Accordingly,
President Goodluck Jonathan has raised a 22-member committee headed by the retired Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Alfa Belgore, to review the recommendations of the confab.
The committee will also review the outstanding issues arising from the 2006 Political Reform Conference. The National Constitutional Conference was held between 1994 and 1995 during the reign of the late military dictator, General Sani Abacha.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, who announced the constitution of the committee in a statement in Abuja, said President Jonathan approved the setting up of the committee to review outstanding issues from recent constitutional conferences.
He said: “The set up of this committee is as a result of months of careful assessment of the political situation in the country by the government and the desire of Mr. President to create more avenues to promote peace, greater understanding, unity and good governance in the country.”
While Senator Udoma Udo Udoma is to serve as the deputy chairman of the committee, with Mr. Ferdinand Agu in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, serving as the secretary.
According to the names of membership released by the SGF, former Minister of Information,
...Professor Jerry Gana and Mr. G.O. Miri, would serve as members representing the North Central geo-political zone of the country.
.....Also, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe and Amb. Jubrin Chinade, would represent the North-East as members, while
....Dr. Abubakar Sadiq and Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha represent the North West.
.......The South East has professor Anya O. Anya and Dr. Chukwuemaka Ezeife as members, with the
.....South-South having Mrs. Tessy Ikimi and Mr. Ledun Mitee as members of the committee.
The immediate past Head of Civil Service of the Federation,
....Prof. Oladepo Afolabi and the former Minister of Transport and a Peoples Democratic (PDP) chieftain, Chief Ebenezer Babatope would represent the South West.
Other members include,
Mr. Peter Esele, president of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Alhaji Salmot Badru, Hajia Najatu Mohammed, Ms Comfort Obi, Alhaji Wakil Mohammed and Barrister Halima Alfa.
