A Nigerian military spokesman in Maiduguri, capital of Nigeria’s north eastern state of Borno said today that suspected members of a radical Muslim sect have killed two policemen and a customs officer in three separate attacks.

Maj. Gen. Jack Nwachukwu Nwaogbo said two motorcycle-mounted gunmen from the Boko Haram sect shot a policeman in the city of Maiduguri Tuesday morning.

He said another policeman and a customs officer were killed soon after in similar attacks in other parts of the town.

Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is sacrilege” in the local Hausa language, is responsible for a rash of killings targeting police officers, soldiers, politicians and clerics in Nigeria’s north over the last year. They have also claimed responsibility for a bombing at the nation’s police headquarters that killed two last month.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the weekend bomb attack in the town has risen to eight.

Maj. Gen. Jack Nwachukwu Nwaogbo told The Associated Press on Monday that assailants threw a bomb at drinking spot near a police barracks.

At least 15 others were wounded during the attack in the city of Maiduguri Sunday evening.
