Akpabio call for NDDC’s restructuring

Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has called for the restructuring of the Niger Delta Development Commi-ssion, NDDC, to attract meaningful development to the Niger Delta region.

Governor Akpabio, who made the call in Uyo while fielding questions from newsmen on national issues as the state marks its 24th year of creation, said the re-organisation was necessary so that it does not remain as a drain pipe where Nigeria would continue to waste money.

Akpabio said: “If the NDDC was set up as a task force to intervene and fix the deplorable condition of infrastructure, then there would be no need for the NDDC budget to get to the National Assembly.

“The NDDC should be made to focus on infrastruc-tural development that can turn the region around. State governments should monitor the NDDC’s projects because the current arrangement does not serve the needs of the Niger Delta region.

“It was structured to fail since it does not have a quick-fix solution to the problems of the region.”
