Revisit Niger Delta disarmament, lawyer urges FG

A Yenagoa-based legal practitioner has urged the Federal Government to revisit the Niger Delta disarmament programme following invasion of Ijaw communities by some ex-militants using sophisticated weapons.

Olu Ojujoh made the call in Yenagoa at the weekend while reacting to an attack on Kolombo, an Ijaw community in Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State allegedly carried out by two former militant leaders, Bibopri Ajube alias ‘Shoot at Sight’ and Omo Tomwerigha. Ojujoh told BusinessDay that the duo and their armed followers in seven speedboats invaded the Kolombo on Thursday, razed several houses, shot and wounded four persons and took four others including a woman hostage.

The lawyer said Chairman Ajuwa, Duimini Ajuwa and others who were shot and wounded were receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital; while Queen Solubo, Abe James and two others were held hostage and being tortured at Safarogbo community. He said the development was proof that the former militant leaders did not really submit their arms during the disarmament programme that followed the Federal Government’s declaration of amnesty in 2009.
