Ogoni group demands implementation of UNEP report

The Ogoni Welfare Association, Lagos chapter, has called on the Federal Government to order immediate implemen-tation of the United Nations Environmental Programme, UNEP, report on Ogoniland.

The group also called on the Federal Government to declare the oil company persona non grata due to its negligence in oil exploration and exploitation in Ogoniland and Niger Delta in general.

The group’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. ThankGod Meekor, who briefed newsmen, yesterday, in Lagos, lamented the startling revelation of severe harm, damage and devastating ecological disaster caused by Shell and its collaborators as contained in the report.

The group is demanding  comprehensive  implementation of the UNEP report’s recommendations under UN supervision; immediate conveyance of stakeholders meeting to address the issues raised in the report; a minimum of 99 per cent of the manpower needs, both skilled and trainable, to be deployed for the implementation of the report be sourced from amongst the Ogoni at home and the Diaspora
