LAGOS — A panel appointed by the Nigerian president to study violence in the northeast and recommend whether to negotiate with an Islamist sect on Thursday submitted its "interim" report, an official said.

"The committee today submitted its interim report to the secretary to the government of the federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, and it was granted a two-week extension to complete its assignment," his spokesman Naina Salihu told AFP.

Salihu did not give further details either on the content of the report or when exactly the two-week extension will come to an end.
