Over the turbulent history of Nigeria, the judiciary seemed to have been the only institution that withstood the crisis of decay and disruption to a great extent, unlike the other arms of government. Our courts could boast of men and women who have served consistently in the bench for 30 years without interruption. Despite the precarious beginning as seen in the case of Lakanmi v. Attorney General of the Federation, considered by this  writer to be the defining moment in the Nigerian jurisprudence, our courts have managed to survive, and even thrive amidst the chaos in both the executive and legislative arms of government. If Nigeria remains a unified corporate entity today, we probably owe that to the Nigerian courts and the brave judges. And if we have any hope for a future Nigeria in which justice, fairness, equality and equity would prevail, we look up to the judiciary for the crystallization of such hope.
