House of Representatives has accused Ministry of the Niger Delta Affairs of duplication of projects and appropriation in areas which Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) had made similar budgetary provisions for.

Chairman of the House Committee on Niger Delta, Olaka Nwogu, while reacting to the 2011 budget defence of the ministry in Abuja on Thursday, also noted that the ministry was not doing enough in the award of the East-West Road project.

He alleged that over 130 communities have been cut off by the lack of commitment of the ministry.

Earlier, Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe, had said security in the Niger Delta was being threatened by inadequate funding of the ministry.

He lamented the paltry funding given the ministry, saying its budget, which was N155 billion last year has been reduced to N52 billion in the 2011 budget.

“To sustain and consolidate on the progress achieved in the Niger Delta that has brought the relative peace, especially in the area of amnesty programme, the Niger Delta region should be adequately funded.
