Abia Orders Demolition of Structures On Waterways in Aba

The Abia Government has ordered the demolition of all structures on waterways in Aba, the state's commercial hub.

This follows the expiration of an earlier ultimatum given to owners of such structures by the government.

Briefing newsmen on Wednesday in Umuahia, the Media Adviser to Gov. Theodore Orji, Mr Bonnie Iwuoha, said that the task force earlier raised was now poised to carry out its task.

Iwuoha said that the government had given enough time within which the owners of such structures should remove them but that the people had remained adamant.

The media adviser added that although some of the people were agitating against the move "government is determined to clear the drains that have constituted a problem in Aba."

He complained that government's efforts to clean up the city had always been hampered by the people's poor attitude to sanitation issues.

"There is no going back this time as all buildings, vehicles, both abandoned and in use that constitute obstacles along waterways would be removed. (NAN)
