Sylva appeals for peace in Niger Delta

The people of the Niger Delta have been urged to give peace a chance in order to bring development in the region.

Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, gave the advice while speaking at the 41st anniversary celebration of “Opuama Day and Fishing Festival” at Opuama community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

Describing violent agitation as a passing phase in the history of the Niger Delta struggle, the governor noted that recent political developments in the country, especially the electoral victory of President Goodluck Jonathan in the presidential election, indicates that the problem of gross underdevelopment occasioned by criminal neglect and marginalisation of the region by successive federal governments would soon be a thing of the past.

Mr Sylva, however, pointed out that the region, particularly Bayelsa State, could only attract adequate infrastructural development if the people continue to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.
