Nigeria: Niger Delta - JTF, John Togo in Battle for Supremacy

Yenagoa — The battle for the control of the waterways of the Niger Delta between the men of the Nigerian Armed Forces and renegade militant leader, John Ipoko a.k.a John Togo continued to rage over the weekend with the Joint (Military) Task Force (JTF) suffering a devastating loss at the battle that took place at Obubu creek, near Ayakoromo community in Delta State.

The latest defeat of the military is coming on the heels of efforts by the military high command to capture or kill the renegade militant who last year was declared wanted for the killing of some soldiers in the area.

The action of John Togo led to the sacking of Ayakoromo by the military. But after going underground for some months, Togo recently returned to embark on an all out battle with the JTF that has been going on for some days.

The JTF in a press statement by the coordinator, Media Joint Media Centre, Lt. Col. Timothy Antigha, Sunday admitted that "following the unprovoked attack on a JTF patrol on 10th May 2011, which preceded this on-going operation, some personnel sustained various degrees of injuries and have been evacuated for adequate medical attention."

THISDAY gathered that John Togo's men had laid ambush on the JTF men at Obubu creek after luring the soldiers to shallow creek where the military boat got grounded, thereby exposing them as easy target.
