Nigeria: Imo Governorship - A Loss Foretold

By now Ikedi Ohakim, Imo State governor until May 29, will be wondering what hit him. If his achievements in government had been the sole criterion for winning elections, he should be looking forward to another four-year term in office by the end of the month.

But Owelle Rochas Okorocha, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance in the Imo governorship election that was concluded on Friday, put paid to Ohakim's return bid. He made history yesterday as the Independent National Electoral Commission declared him winner of the election.

His victory validates pre-poll projections that had tipped him as a possible winner of the election. In a poll conducted for THISDAY/Ipsos poll conducted by Ipsos, one of the leading market research companies in the world, Okorocha bested Ohakim in the three-part poll.
