Host communities to the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) at Jones Creek in Warri South-West local government area of Delta State have threatened to disrupt the activities of the company in their should it fail to recognise them as a stakeholder in the ongoing privatisation of the facility.
A prominent Niger Delta activist and youth leader in Okerenkoko Community, Mike Johnny, who handed down the warning while briefing journalists in Warri yesterday, said the communities were aware of the ongoing acquisition of the flow station by Conoil from Shell. He insisted that the company should deal directly with the host communities in the entire process instead of going through a third party.
According to Mr Johnny, “We the members of the host communities of Ijaw extraction are aware that Conoil has bought over the Jones Creek flow station. As peace-loving people, we do not see anything wrong with handing-over the flow station but what we oppose is allowing a cabal, which parades itself as a middleman for the communities, to hijack the entire process for its selfish interests.
“Already, these people have opened negotiations with the management of Conoil, the new owner of the flow station, on the percentage accruable to the host communities under the new arrangement. We however make bold to say that these people working as middlemen are on their own as they do not represent the interest of the people in the communities they claim to be representing,” he stated.
