PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria May 21 (Reuters) - Rival political supporters fired shots and set cars ablaze in Nigeria's main oil city on Saturday after a candidate standing in local government elections was kidnapped, the police said.

Rivers state police commissioner, Suleiman Abba, confirmed the fire fight and said gunmen abducted one candidate after voting finished in a local council election in the centre of Port Harcourt, the largest city in the oil-rich Niger Delta.

Abba said police and firemen were still getting to the scene and he could not confirm if there had been any casualties. Elections were not taking place on a national level.
