Scores of policemen and civilians Friday lost their lives in an early morning attack by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect on a first generation bank and police station/barracks in Damboa town, 80 kilometres from Maiduguri , the Borno state capital
The attack, according to sources, lasted for several hours with the suspected Islamic fundamentalists reportedly using explosives to destroy buildings at the First Bank branch office and the police barracks in the relatively peaceful town.
The action by the suspected sect members was said to have resulted in many casualties including police officers and civilians.
Borno state police commissioner,Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed,who confirmed the incident to newsmen on Friday afternoon said many lives including that of police officers and other ranks were actually lost to the attack.
The CP who described the attack as unfortunate also said it was a Black Friday in the history of the state police command.
Mohammed further said many arrests had been made over the incident and that he was on his way to Damboa to assess the extent of the destruction by the suspected fudamentalists in the town.

Police Deputy Superintendent Abba Lawan Kirawa said 13 people had been killed in the attack, including eight civilians.
