Buhari Their Hostage!

Interesting psychoanalysis ... which would not encourage trust in the subject as a head of state.

Since I encountered Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (GMB) from close quarters in 1996 I have become arrested by his virtues. What endeared me and many to him are his simplicity, disarming honesty and forthrightness, decisiveness, unwavering and dogged commitment to whatever he set his mind on for Nigeria.

Once Buhari trusts or believes in your loyalty, he surrenders all, even his life to you. He believes that everything you do or say is for the promotion of those ideals which he believes you both share. He believes that those around him, would like him, never lie.

Buhari’s statements – or the lack of them – during the mayhem that was visited on the country by those who claim to be fighting for him have been most misplaced, unfortunate and go to underscore these views about the role of his lieutenants.

The truth is that because Buhari considers loyalty higher than competence and integrity, he has continued to do the same things the same way and has continued to fail. Since his foray into public life, he has always handed his life over to a few men who have always run and manipulated it to their advantage and who literarily took him hostage.

For making Buhari and his misguided fanatical followers to believe in their illusion of grandeur, CPC leaders led the country closer to disintegration last week. They have all but destroyed all the gains in religious and ethnic understanding and harmony which great leaders in the hue of the Sultan of Sokoto, Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar III and the many of those who believe in and support his bridge-building efforts. Overnight, all the bridges of national amity being erected systematically through our democratic practice are being hewed down by a bunch of irresponsible and blood-sucking relevance-seekers who are trying to use the name and essence of Buhari for their nefarious intentions.

Obviously, Buhari has not always been lucky in his party membership and choice of political friends and allies. His morality and transparency levels have always soared high and above those around him who had always exploited his fervent following to their own advantage, only to dump him when they are done. It happened in the ANPP where many governors and other members of the political elite used him to ascend and dumped him immediately after. Now evil people are currently using him to play out their nefarious plots which might have been hatched from outside to destroy Nigeria and make the hopes and aspirations of enemies of our country to materialise.

But, even in our justified anger over the unfortunate incidents that took place last week, we must learn to separate the grain from the chaff. Even in our disappointment that Buhari fell short of our high expectations of him as a statesman who many of us have supported for his sterling qualities, by dancing to the whims of his evil, self serving friends, we should show him some sympathy as a man who had continually been a victim of betrayal and deceit. We should rather hunt down and punish all those, who for whatever motives, have brought us so much tears.
