Barely two weeks to the April elections, 53 per cent of respondents in a poll conducted by NOI Polls Ltd have placed President Goodluck
Jonathan ahead of other presidential candidates, saying he will win the election.
Commissioned by a non-governmental organisation (NGO), ANAP Foundation, the poll result also indicates that “64 per cent of the respondents (in Lagos ) think the governor and candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), will win the April governorship election”.
Unveiling the report of the poll in Lagos Tuesday, founder of ANAP Foundation, Mr. Atedo Peterside, said the result indicates that “46 per cent of Nigerians were aware that Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau is running for president; 48 per cent of respondents were aware that Mallam Nuhu Ribadu is running for president; 73 per cent of Nigerians were aware that Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) is running for president, while 93 per cent of respondents were aware that Goodluck Jonathan is running for president’’.
According to Peterside, for all other candidates, “less than 20 per cent of Nigerians knew that they were running for president; majority 85 per cent of Nigerians feel very strongly about their choice for the presidential position, while 68 per cent approve of Goodluck Jonathan’s performance as president”.
On Lagos , he said the data generated for the state governorship poll indicates that “98 per cent of the respondents were aware that Babatunde Fashola is running for governorship of Lagos State , while 41 per cent of the Lagos State electorate were aware that Ade Dosunmu is running for governorship of the state”.
He also said: “...for all other candidates, less than 10 per cent of Lagos State residents knew they were running for governor; just under two-thirds (65 per cent) of eligible voters in Lagos State indicated intention to vote for Babatunde Fashola in the April election; majority (89 per cent) of Lagos State voters feel very strongly about their choice for the governorship position”, while 85 per cent of the state’s residents approved of Babatunde Fashola’s performance as governor.
He said the presidential opinion poll was carried out from February 11 to February 28 this year with a representative random sample of Nigerians drawn from the nation’s six geo-political zones, while that of Lagos was conducted from February 7 to February 22 with a representative random sample of Lagos residents drawn from all its local government areas.
Peterside also said the ANAP Foundation decided to commission NOI Polls Limited to conduct face-to-face Lagos State governorship and presidential polls to ascertain public sentiment on the candidacy of aspirants for the offices.
He added that “NOI Polls administered the survey, utilising well established survey methodologies including scientifically tested sampling techniques developed by Gallup Organisation.”
