Nigeria: President Signs Human Rights Amendment Bill

After an eight-year wait, President Goodluck Jonathan finally signed into law the National Human Rights Commission Act (Amendment) Bill.

The bill, which was signed into law by the president last month, was not made public until this weekend.

The president's assent followed the passage of the bill by the two houses of the National Assembly in December last year. The Senate had passed the bill on December 9, 2010, while the House of Representatives concurred on the 16th of the same month.

The president said he signed the bill into law because he was convinced that the decision by the legislature to pass it was correct.
